How To Reframe Your ‘Weight Loss’ New Year’s Resolution

New Year's is right around the corner, which means many of us will be planning to set New Year’s resolutions for 2023.

My New Year's resolution was ALWAYS to lose weight.

I was never happy with how my body looked and was constantly trying to be skinnier. I would tell myself I was only going to eat salads and exercise everyday starting January 1.

I would start off strong...and then two weeks in, I would mess up. It was unsustainable. I was tired and weak. I was restricting so many foods that when I finally allowed myself to eat I would binge, and the toxic cycle of restricting, binging and over-exercising would continue on and on.

My self-talk was filled with shame and guilt. I felt like things were never going to get better for me. That I would never have a healthy relationship with food, my body or myself.

👏🏼What moved the mark for me was finally taking the time to evaluate my WHY.

  • WHY was losing weight so important to me?

  • HOW was I going to get out of this toxic cycle?

  • What are my DESIRED FEELINGS I hoped to experience by focusing my energy on losing weight?

It was difficult to look so deep and be completely honest with myself, but I was desperate to feel good in my body and tired of the downward spiral. I finally realized what I truly wanted. I wanted to be able to look in the mirror and fully and completely LOVE AND ACCEPT MYSELF and be confident in my own skin.

I created and committed to routines and habits that were proven to be supportive of my mental, physical and emotional health. I furthered my education around nutrition and holistic health practices through the Institute of Integrative Nutrition and completely rewired my relationship with myself, my body and food.

➡️If one of your resolutions is to lose weight, I totally get it. You can lose the weight and still maintain a healthy relationship with yourself, your body and food by creating supportive routines and habits.

You can lose the 10 pounds...and still not be happy if you are just focused on the weight coming off. When you put an intention behind it and focus on how you are feeling emotionally and mentally, as well as physically, that’s when the real changes are made!

In order to get clear on your WHY, I encourage you to ask yourself, "How do I want to feel in my body and in my day-to-day life?"

Are you wanting to:

⚡️feel healthier

⚡️have more energy

⚡️increase your strength

⚡️feel confident in your own skin

⚡️care for yourself

⚡️have food freedom

Creating positive momentum around future lifestyle changes and developing a specific plan of action can support you in reaching your desired feelings and health goals.

✨SO, if your resolution is to lose weight in the New Year, I encourage you to ask yourself, "How do I want to feel?" and make THAT your intention and resolution.
